Whether it is to get a better view of your shot, or just to make your video rig look cool. If you are reading this post, then you probably have some need for an external field monitor for your video productions. And you don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars to get one. The solution is an in-car, rear view monitor. What you will need is:
- 12v Rechargeable battery
- AV Cable
- Phone/Tablet tripod adapter
These monitors can be purchased for as low as $20 for a 4.3, inch, 640x480 monitor. You will find many of these products being sold. Be sure to look at the resolution, a lot of them are as low as 480x234. I wouldn’t go with anything lower than 640x480. At these prices, you won't find any monitors with the fancy features of a normal DSLR field monitor. Use these monitors strictly for shot framing. Colors and focus will definitely take a backseat, but the picture is amazingly sharp at this price.
One drawback to these is that they don’t have a built in battery, so you have to carry around a fairly bulky battery. But it sure beats having to drop $200 on a field monitor, and it looks pretty cool on your video rig.
